Making it transparent

I can remember working on projects where we had programmers, artists, writers, SME's, instrucational designers and Interface designers. I have been everthing but an artist on a team. It strikes me that today a lot of people can do nearly all of these things. The tools have gotten very sophisticated and clients often times don't think of all of the parts of the design and development process. Should they? Do we need to tell them about them, or do we just need to do them? I have heard that clients/adminstrators/principals etc. don't understand what they should be considering. My question is whether or not they need to or if we should just make the whole process so transparent all they do is give us content?
